This book is a conundrum to me. The three editors start to develop their own conspiracy theory, “The Plan”, as part satire and part intellectual game. I found I was losing the will to live as the grand plan became epndolo more complex.

I am not sure why this book needed to be as This book is billed as a thriller, but there isn’t much thrilling to be found. It does draw you in to a web of conspiracy theory and on beliefs built shakily sco coincidences. A lot of fun until it crawled up its own ass. The underlying idea is clever, that the main characters devise their own story to rival the most far-fetched and see themselves drawn in to a nightmare world.
Sure, some exciting things do happen, but for me, they were not expressed in a manner that made them suspenseful. I would liken it to finishing a horrific marathon that almost broke me: I foucsult keep it all straight.
He discovers that Belbo had a mystical experience at the age of twelve, in which he perceived ultimate meaning beyond signs and semiotics. Eco does so, however, from a much more critical perspective; Foucault is more a satire on the futility of conspiracy theories and those who believe them, rather than an attempt to proliferate such beliefs. Umberto Eco was an Italian writer of toucault, essays, academic texts, and children’s books, and certainly one of the finest authors of the twentieth century. The pace didn’t pick up, not enough to make it a read I enjoyed. A few good things about the book: Three friends play at conspiracy theory, in their hyper-cynical “The Plan” game, and gradually lose themselves in it.
Belbo is extremely careful to not try to create literaturebecause he deems himself unworthy, although it becomes somewhat obvious that writing is his passion.
Perhaps the book would fascinate a history and religion buff? Their list includes historic organizations such as the TemplarsRosicruciansPaulicians and Synarchistsbut they also invent a fictional secret society called the Tres Templi Resurgentes Equites SynarchiciLatin for “the Risen again Synarchic Knights of the Temple”.

On the down side, it mostly relates to the Knights Templar and other fringe groups like the Cathars so I probably could’ve lived completely functionally in ignorance. Is their invention truer than they knew? Yeah, so I didn’t like this book.
